Alvin Plantinga, the Christian Philosopher You NEED to Read


C. S. Lewis is probably the most famous Christian “armchair” philosophers. It is (past) time for both the Christian and non-Christian worlds to learn of and from one of the most eminent professional Christian philosophers, Dr. Alvin Plantinga.

Plantinga over the decades has developed some of the most philosophically rigorous defenses of theism and devastating critiques of naturalism. Chances are you have heard or even used some of his arguments in your apologetics discussions without even knowing it.

David J. Theroux of The Independent Institute (where Plantinga is on one of the Boards of Advisors) has written a wonderful introductory piece honoring Plantinga’s reception of the University of Pittsbrgh’s Nicholas Rescher Prize for Contributions to Systematic Philosophy.

I strongly urge you to read it. In addition to honoring Plantinga, it outlines his major contributions, and offers many good links to books, articles and videos of Plantinga’s work. If you have any interest or concern about the worldview struggles in our culture and want to better understand how to respond to naturalistic attacks on your faith, personally and in the culture, this is required reading.

To Make a Difference

Every semester, I meet individually with each of my students to discuss their plans and dreams for the future, and offer some personalized career counseling.

With many, I ask them a pair of questions to try to get below the surface, and for many, it is very difficult to answer them, even for those that have thought about them before.

1)      What are you good at? What are your gifts, strengths, talents, or skills? What do your friends admire about you?
2)      What are you passionate about? What energizes, motivates, or inspires you? What makes you exult or rage?

For many, if not most, the most common passion expressed is to make a difference in the world or to help people.

It is striking to me that this should be such a common refrain, as it seems independent of any spiritual tradition or other recognizable single factor. However, there are some interesting things I have either noticed or inferred from the sum of their comments.

Evidence?


Yesterday, I wrote about another interpretation of data showing that some regions of the brain seem to be responsible for religious experiences. The problem with my interpretation, an atheist would say, is that there is no evidence that such regions are a hardwired means for a spiritual God to interact with physical people.

I argue that there is also no evidence that it isn’t a plausible explanation. Hold on, let me explain.

If there is a supernatural dimension to existence, what would we expect evidence of that to look like?

That is a critical question. If we don’t know what to look for in terms of falsifiable data, then not finding it is not proof against it.

Vibrant Dance Revisited: Faith: Able or Willing?


I spent most of the posts back in November summarizing the Vibrant Dance Symposium on Faith and Science that occurred here in Austin back in October. One of the speakers was Alister McGrath, the British scientist and theologian, who, though unable to travel to the symposium sent a video presentation.

While an overall excellent presentation, he did make a point I wanted to visit at a later date. Turns out that’s today. At one point, McGrath argued that some people (mostly scientists) are trapped within reason, and unable to make the leap to faith.

I largely disagree with that statement philosophically. They are presupposing a purely naturalistic universe—but they do demonstrate faith in daily life, but it is faith based on reason, not blind faith.

3. What is Science?: History

Let’s do a very quick history lesson. For much of human history, folks made very impressive observations about natural phenomena that led to amazing projects like Stonehenge, the observatory at Chichen Itza, the Egyptian and Central American pyramids, gunpowder, ship building, navigation, etc. To these people, there was little division between the natural and the supernatural. Physical processes occurred due to the actions of the gods. To the extent that natural laws were separate, it was the gods that provided mechanisms for apparent violations of the laws. In spite of their amazing achievements, the natural world was still viewed as capricious and chaotic, and human understanding was recognized as being limited, thus elaborate rituals were performed to appease, placate, and/or supplicate the gods of nature.

Starting with the ancient Greeks, it began to be consciously realized that the universe was rational enough to be studied philosophically, and observations could be formally tested through experimentation. However, much of it was still up to the gods. A few hundred miles away, the Jews were developing a monotheistic culture based on an intelligent, personal and involved Creator. It can be argued that the expansion of Judeo-Christian theology in the context of Greek and Roman philosophy ultimately led to the Renaissance. The concepts of a rational universe, coupled with the creation of the universe by a single god who was loving and personal instead of capricious and random, ultimately, over the centuries, allowed Western philosophy to come to a point where the universe was viewed as completely rational and able to be studied in an organized way with mechanisms that occurred independently of specific action, although initiated by this god, leading to a cohesive framework of knowledge. Indeed, the early modern scientists such as Galileo and Newton expressly viewed their research as a way to better understand God. Their logic was that if this god was personal and real, then studying creation revealed aspects of personality and character, much the way studying paintings might reveal something about the painter.

Even the “Dark Ages” weren’t as ‘dark’ as we are lead to believe, as the monastic system preserved scholarship and learning during the waves of barbarian invasions. Some communities actually had surprisingly advanced understandings of natural processes. Early Christian fathers such as Augustine even indicated a belief in an old universe, and many understood the spherical nature of our planet. While the masses and even many royalty were so focused on surviving the next invasion that accurate natural understanding became fairly rare, it is a mistake to assume that no one was maintaining or even advancing what we would today call scientific understanding.

It was also during the time of the Renaissance that different aspects of reality began to be studied independently of each other, leading to the various branches of academic fields we have today. Initially, all were viewed as specialties in the art of philosophy. Scholars who were leaders in philosophy were titled ‘doctors of philosophy,’ hence, regardless of the academic field, the terminal (highest) degree is still called a Ph.D. Early fields were things like pure philosophy, natural philosophy, and the humanities.

Natural philosophy was the forerunner of modern science. It was concerned with the study of the natural world, and since mechanisms operated due to rules and laws rather than by divine intervention at every turn, a conscious separation between the natural and supernatural became formalized. In their worldview, God was still free to intervene, suspending or altering the natural mechanisms and consequences, but otherwise things ran according to the initial conditions and structure He set in motion.

Our understanding and knowledge of the natural universe expanded very quickly from this point, and hasn’t stopped accelerating. Parallel developments in philosophy, politics, and sociology also accelerated. As we understood nature better, we became more adept at manipulating it, leading to major technological advancements with increasing frequency. Our academic fields became further defined along discipline specialties.

With all of these things happening, people increasingly began to see the universe as purely mechanistic and separate from any theological foundations, and indeed there was an increasing belief that religion was necessary for imposing moral order upon society but was no longer needed for imposing physical order on the world. This viewpoint served as a foundation of the Enlightenment, which developed philosophy to the point where it is now in some circles viewed as being self-sufficient for creating moral order. These worldviews still coexist and intense debate between them has resulted in bitter disputes and even wars. Today there are basically four camps: (1) those that maintain that God is needed both for moral order and physical order, as explicitly revealed in some holy text, (2) those that maintain that God is needed for moral order and creation, but the relationship between God and mechanism is more complex, (3) those that maintain that some sort of supernatural force is out there, but what role He/She/It has/had with things isn’t clear and may not be all that important, and (4) those that maintain that both moral and physical order are fully explainable without God, therefore, He/She/It must not exist as deities were invented by early humanity to explain what wasn’t understood.

It is helpful to examine how the debate arose, where various sides have erred, and try to reestablish some reasonable boundaries and definitions for having more fruitful discussions. This introduction is painting with a VERY broad brush, and it is a given that there are folks all over the place who will bitterly argue that it is at the very least inaccurate in aspects of its summary. They have a point; however, for every criticism, whole academic careers have been spent trying to straighten it out, and it is foolish to expect it to be accomplished in these few posts. The purpose here is to briefly show how we got to where we are today and how to move forward with a minimum of bloody noses. This quality of understanding the philosophical limits of our fields—how to have constructive dialogue, how to critically and graciously examine the arguments of others, and how to make a reasoned response (as opposed to an emotionally driven gut reaction)—is vital for us as academics.

 (It is important to note somewhere in all of this that the history and process described here is traditional Western science in modernity. There is currently great debate on the limitations of it in terms of its assumptions and attitudes. One example in mainstream culture is the debate between ‘modern’ and ‘alternative’ medicine. This introduction attempts to illustrate another area where philosophical limitations lead to conflict.)

Define Your Terms!


I got into an argument with a friend the other day over evolution. He argued that basically evolution had done nothing good for the world, and I maintained that, in spite of some questions about the ultimate accuracy of the model, it had successfully guided research into some useful discoveries. He responded that they were made using what Bacon, Newton and others had developed long before Darwin came along.

We went round and round until I realized that we were talking past each other. He was arguing against evolutionary philosophy, and I was talking strictly about the scientific theory of evolution as a mechanism. I realized that this was the agent-mechanism debacle that I keep railing about, all over again. In his mind, ‘evolution’ refers to the entire kit and kaboodle of atheistic evolutionary theory and philosophy of origins. In my mind, I see distinct separations between Darwin’s scientific theory (and subsequent derivations) and the naturalistic philosophy with which it is often paired and which tend to feed off of each other.

Therein is the confusion—to many people, Christian or otherwise, there is no separation between the scientific mechanistic theory of evolution and the naturalism prevalent among atheistic/agnostic folks. Thus, to talk about one, you are talking about the other.

Unless one recognizes that they are separate (though closely related), it can be difficult to evaluate the theory on its scientific merits or lack thereof (depending on your viewpoint). The theory says the diversity of life arose through genetic changes over time. The philosophy says therefore that God did not have any hand in getting us here and, in fact, doesn’t exist.

Thus, it is imperative to carefully define your terms in most any discussion and make sure all parties agree to them. Unfortunately, even once I realized the confusion and explained it to him, we were forced to agree to disagree, as he seemed unable or unwilling to concede my assertion that they were separable.

For those folks who are ‘theistic evolutionists,’ this is the uphill battle they face. There are all too many people on both sides like my friend who don’t see them as separable. Therefore, many Christians see them as heretics, and many naturalists see them as cheap compromisers trying to find a way to allow for their faith in the face of ‘overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.’

In nearly every field, there is at least one issue that causes bitter division. What is it in yours? Can some of the heat in the division be reduced by taking a step back, and starting from first principles, set up the definition of terms such that jumbled ideas can be separated? (Maybe this isn’t possible long term as the jumbled ideas may truly be interrelated, but is it possible to temporarily set up a separation for purposes of argument and theory refinement?)

"It's a Miracle!"


A variant of an email I once received:
“A dear old saint sat at the back of a sermon on the parting of the Red Sea where a typical liberal minister begins…
Almost immediately she stands up and cries out “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who drowned Pharaoh and the armies of Synod in the Red Sea!”.
Rather taken aback, the minister continues to outline how there was only 5cm of water at the time, etc etc. and Israel crossed across what was, technically, a shallow ford.
Not to be outdone, the saint rises again and exclaims, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who drowned Pharaoh and the armies of Synod in just 5cm of water in the Red Sea!”  (http://www.standfirminfaith.com/?/sf/page/26627, accessed 10/13/2010)

While current archaeological/scientific evidence tends to support the Biblical account of the event, the anecdote offers an important clue about the nature of miracles, that of the agent behind the miracle, not the mechanism of its occurrence.

Continuing the theme discussed over the last several days, (and reinforcing a recent comment to Tuesday’s post) the existence or proposal of a natural mechanism does not negate the possibility of Divine action. When in my teens, I read a Reader’s Digest article about how the explosive destruction of the volcanic Mediterranean island of Thera (aka Santorini) could easily have provided the mechanism by which the various Mosaic plagues upon Egypt, including the Red Sea crossing, could have occurred.

Thus, the naturalist says that it isn’t a miracle. Well, how then do they explain that Moses predicted the beginning and ending of each plague? I somehow doubt he had sufficient understanding of geological processes and environmental impacts at the time to recognize the volcano’s eruption and know all of those details so precisely. It seems to me that many of the miracles in the Bible are predicted to occur ahead of time as a verification of their authenticity, so that even if they do occur via a natural mechanism, the foreknowledge would still be a supernatural event, and therefore still a miracle.

It is consistent with God’s MO in the Bible to use an efficient natural/historical process to bring about complex events at precisely the right time to accomplish His purposes. What is more amazing—doing a simple series of plagues, giving Moses the power to start/stop them or using one single event to cause a cascade of discrete and varied occurrences resulting in the liberation of a nation of slaves in an orderly fashion?

I find myself kind of hoping the Reader’s Digest version is right.

Harry Who-dini?, or, The Problem of Expectation


Thanks for the great ideas and follow up questions! How many times have you read/heard stories about folks who lose their faith because their expectations weren’t met? In the movie, “Expelled,” about the conflict between faith and science, several noted atheist scientists commented that they lost their faith due to various combinations of personal tragedy and seeing naturalistic explanations offer an alternative to “Biblical” ones.

I suggest that both Believers and Naturalists have made errors in their expectations on Divine behaviour, and when those expectations do not appear to be met, it has caused bad theology and/or loss of faith. It seems that a lot of folks expect that if God acts, it will be obviously 'miraculous.' 

The Naturalists tend to say, 'because there is a naturalistic explanation, God couldn't have done it.' The Christians say, 'because God did it, it can't be ordinary.' Both views are illogical. The Naturalistic problem can be explained by this analogy--just because you know how to get out of a straightjacket does not mean Houdini didn't do it. The Christian problem is a form of shortsightedness--everything God does needs to be supernatural, and so they don't realize that creating nature in the first place was supernatural.

Ultimately, this leads to the conflagration of two very separate issues (and there are some who don't want to see them separated): "Where did the universe come from?" (ie- what/who is the agent of the Big Bang, et al.) and "What is the mechanism or chain of events between the Big Bang and now?" One is primarily a philosophical problem to which science can offer insight, and one is primarily a historical/scientific problem to which philosophy can offer insight. To the extent that the two can be separated, progress can be made fairly amicably. Keeping them tangled, in my opinion, is what keeps the fight so bitter.

One reason I argue for maintaining a theistically friendly worldview in science is that it keeps more possibilities open when interpreting data--let's assume for a moment that neither God nor mindless physical processes created the universe, but some third agent of whom we have not yet conceived. If your innate worldview assumes there is no supernatural, OR that the universe HAD to have been created by God, then your reading of the data is limited by that worldview. If, however, you are able to keep things a little more objective--"I don't believe in the supernatural, but I'll allow for the possibility of it in my model" and conversely, "I believe in some form of divine creation, but I'll allow for other possibilities," then you are taking the blinders off, and can let the data speak more clearly for itself.

We humans like simple explanations, so we make our theories fairly simple, at least at the beginning—it either must be special creation as literally spelled out in the Bible, OR, it is a completely mindless natural variation of genetic code and environmental factors. It tends to take a lot of difficulty to come up with a theory that satisfactorily resolves the paradoxes and lets us overcome our biases.
